John Kitzhaber on Education
Governor's Cool Schools project is funded by teachers union
Governor Kitzhaber and the American Federation of Teachers announced a partnership including $15 million for investment in the Governor's Cool Schools Initiative. Today's announcement gives validation to our Cool Schools project.
I welcome the national interest in this program, and look forward to working with friends in labor. Cool Schools provides access to financing for school districts to fix leaky roofs, upgrade inefficient lighting and heating and make other improvements.

Welcomes waiver from No Child Left Behind standards
I welcome President Obama's leadership in providing relief from the punitive provisions of No Child Left Behind. No Child Left Behind has twisted accountability through its single-minded focus on high-stakes standardized testing and labeling schools
and students as failures. We look forward to working with the U.S. Secretary of Education on a waiver that establishes school accountability based on meaningful information about student progress and delivers appropriate support for schools.

Public education is the cornerstone of democracy
Public education is the cornerstone of a progressive, democratic society. From grade school to graduate school to life-long learning, it is vital that Oregonís education system prepare all of our citizens for the challenges that they will face in the
21st Century. We will begin to implement the Quality Education Model, and for the first time, we will debate a K-12 budget that is directly built around the outcomes expected in the classroom and what it costs to achieve those outcomes.

Improve and invest in public schools.
Kitzhaber is a member of the Democratic Governors Association:
Principles of the Democratic Governors Association:
IMPROVING PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND INVESTING IN OUR YOUNGEST CHILDREN
Democratic Governors are leading the way with highly-trained teachers, strong standards and accountability, increased funding to repair and modernize public school facilities, access to technology and computers, and more discipline and safety in the classrooms.
Democratic Governors believe the most important aspect to insure a childís education is to have the best possible teachers in the classroom. They believe that we must value teachers as professionals, encourage their development to be the best teachers they can be for our children and compensate them accordingly. Democratic Governors favor greater parental choice, but oppose measures that weaken public schools diverting taxpayer dollars to private schools with no accountability for results. Democratic Governors around the country are also forming innovative public-private partnerships to create programs to provide early childhood education, nutrition and health care services to ensure that our children have the best possible start in life.
